About FESAus

FESAus, the Formation Evaluation Society of Australia, is the Australian chapter of the Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts (SPWLA).

Its aims are to provide a technical monthly forum for geoscientists focused on all aspects of formation evaluation, from new tools available to new techniques and approaches to analysing reservoirs, and to encourage formation evaluation professionals to network. In line with the founding principles of the SPWLA, FESAus is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of the science of Petrophysics and Formation Evaluation, including well logging, coring, and other formation evaluation techniques and to the application of these techniques to the exploitation of gas, oil and other minerals, particularly in Australia.

FESAus’ July 2025 technical meeting in Perth: “Validity of Geomechanical Sanding Evaluation, Examples from Gas Fields in Offshore Otway and Onshore North Perth Basins”.

Abbas Khaksar (Baker Hughes)

Geomechanical sanding evaluation has become a key tool in the development of fit-for-purpose sand management strategies and well completion decisions. Geomechanical analyses identify the likely sand producing intervals, the timing and the severity of sanding. Sanding prediction are ideally calibrated against field sanding observations. However, in the absence of field observations, the validity of geomechanical predictions can be a concern for field development planning, well design or well intervention decision.
In this presentation the validity of sanding evaluation conducted at early field life is examined with the help of historical production data in two different Australian gas fields from two different geological settings, tectonic stress regimes, well types and operation conditions. The cases include: 1) the Geographe gas field, offshore Otway Basin, Victoria with nearly 2.5 km long with pre-drilled liner open hole completion and more than 11 years of production, and 2) the Waitsia gas field onshore North Perth Basin in Western Australia with cased and perforated completion on production since 2016.
It is shown that with calibrated and updated sand production predictions, reliable assessments can be provided to well engineers for fit-for-purpose and timely sand control and completion decisions.
